The neurorehabilitation package is a multidisciplinary service which relies on clear SMART goals established through close partnership with the person, their caregivers and through the use of clinically robust standardised assessments. The focus of the intervention is to enable the person to maximise skill and functional levels through established neurorehabilitation and neurological therapy practices.

This service package generally lasts 12 weeks and will include:

  • A full multidisciplinary assessment
  • Development and implementation of a bespoke neurorehabilitation and neurological therapy plan
  • Three-week reviews utilising standardized assessments
  • Up to 5 time per week input from relevant therapies, including neurorehabilitation physiotherapy and neurorehabilitation occupational therapy
  • A full home and environmental assessment by a neuro occupational therapist
  • A full handover to domiciliary services to ease transition
  • Prior to discharge from Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, the opportunity for 24- or 48-hour home leave to enable the person to review their skills prior to discharge. This can be with the support of neurological therapy.
  • Full training to carers and caregivers prior to discharge regarding any support or care required
  • Referral to relevant statutory community services and relevant charitable organisations that can provide support on discharge.

The overarching aim of Uplands Rehabilitation Centre is to provide high standards of neurorehabilitation physiotherapy care to improve our patient’s quality of life, by maximising the potential of the affected parts of the body. Every patient with a neurological disorder is affected differently, and therefore the neurological physical therapy provided will be tailored to the patient’s needs to help them improve their health. Neurological patients may have difficulties in walking, balance, coordination and everyday activities. Our neurology physiotherapists and neurorehabilitation occupational therapists are specialised in treating a wide range of conditions.

Common conditions treated at our neuro rehabilitation centre include Stroke, Parkinsons disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, post- operative brain surgery, peripheral nerve injuries, and many more. The main approaches to treating neurological disorders are known as Bobath (normal movement), The Carr and Shepherd (motor relearning), Signe Brunnstrom (Synergic pattern of movement) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.

As a specialist neuro rehab centre, at Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, every patient is seen privately on a one-to-one basis by our specialist neuro physiotherapists and neurorehabilitation occupational therapists. Each session involves assessment of the patient by our specialist therapists, who will then produce a treatment plan. The aim of our neurorehabilitation occupational therapy treatment plans is to try and make the patient as independent as possible in everyday tasks. We also give advice to the patient and their family on how to perform neuro physical therapy exercises correctly. This would enable the patient to safely conduct exercises at home.

The URC frequently receives individuals from National and Regional rehabilitation units to continue their rehabilitation. On other occasions Uplands Rehabilitation Centre will take individuals who have been recommended to go to national or regional units but have chosen to stay within Essex or feel that, as the URC has a lower number of beds than many of those units, are able to provide a more bespoke and person centred approach.
